1. To provide relevant and useful continuing education courses for instructors of undergraduate anatomy and physiology courses.
2. To serve as an advocate/promoter of HAPS-I courses in Partner Societies whose members might benefit from them.
1. The HAPS Institute will be managed by the HAPS Executive Director with input from the Board.
1. The HAPS Executive Director will act as HAPS-I Director. S/he will oversee and administer HAPS-I and work closely with the Board and ASG regarding the expansion and sustainability of HAPS-I.
2. The HAPS-I Director will be responsible for maintaining communication with any institutions that are granting graduate academic credit for HAPS-I courses.
3. HAPS-I Director shall structure courses so that they are profit-making or revenue-neutral and not an expense to the organization.
a. Payment for the instructors of the HAPS-I courses must be approved by the Board of Directors.
1. HAPS-I Faculty must have a graduate degree.
2. HAPS-I Faculty will be responsible for:
a. Developing the course syllabus, choosing and preparing materials, organizing learning activities, and doing all other ordinary faculty duties, all with advice and oversight from the HAPS-I Director.
b. Communicating with students enrolled in the course prior to course meetings, providing syllabi, readings and/or other information as needed for preparation; answering student questions throughout the learning cycle.
c. Organizing and facilitating all course events whether they be face-to-face workshops, online meetings and discussions, laboratories or other learning activities. Normal expectation is one online meeting per week.
d. Participating in student and course/instructor assessment as is proper prior to, during, and after the course.
3.Instructors receive payment for the discharge of Faculty duties.
a. Payment will be at the end of the course.

1. To develop, maintain, and manage standardized HAPS exams.
2. To develop additional HAPS exams based upon needs determined by the Program Director(s).
1. Program leads
a. Three (3) Panel Leads oversee specific duties of the HAPS Exam Program (1. A&P Panel Lead, 2. Anatomy Panel Lead, and 3. Physiology Panel Lead)
i. Appointed positions by the Board, with input from current Panel Leads
ii. Program Leads have 3-year renewable appointments, with no term limits (assuming competent performance during term)
iii. Must be reappointed by the Board
b. Staggered appointments, to ensure continuity and smooth transitions with new leads
c. Panel Leads selected from one of the three testing panels (structure listed below)
d. Panel of Experts members may apply to be a Panel Lead at the end of a Panel Lead’s term
2. Duties:
a. Selects and oversees a panel of experts that creates, edits, and vets questions for the panel’s subject specific HAPS exam
b. Communicates with other Panel Leads to ensure exam creation and editing follows similar paths
c. Reports directly to the Exam Program Director
d. A Panel Lead may serve on multiple Panels of Experts
e. Communicates with both Exam Program Director and Chi-Tester (i.e., testing company) regarding administration of the panel’s subject specific HAPS exam

a. Program Director is a rotating 1-year term of the Panel Lead in the last year of the Panel Lead Term

1. To manage, produce, and organize publication of the HAPS Educator Journal
1. In brief, the Editor in Chief (EC) works at the macro level to help the Educator fulfill its mission statement; the Managing Editor (ME) is responsible for the day-to-day workings of the journal.
2. Editor in Chief (EC)
a. In collaboration with HAPS Board of Directors, determining the mission, policies and procedures of the journal
b. Initiating and overseeing efforts to increase the quality and impact of the journal
i. Creating and maintaining guidelines and procedures for article submissions and reviews
c. Populating the Editorial Board and the Reviewer Panel
d. Overseeing the Editorial Board
e. Submitting biannual reports to the HAPS Executive
f. Representing the HAPS Educator on the HAPS Steering Committee
g. Representing the HAPS Educator on external bodies, such as the LifeSciTRC Advisory Board and Crossref
h. Overseeing revisions of the Educator website
i. Overseeing the uploads of articles to the Life Sci TRC*
j. Overseeing the assignment and depositing of DOIs*
k. Adding cover pages and distributing individual articles to authors*
l. Advising the MC as to the acceptability of borderline articles
m. Supporting the MC when needed
3. Managing Editor (MC)
a. Overseeing the associate editors and copy editors as necessary
b. Communicating with and supporting authors as they create and revise their manuscripts
c. Assigning articles to peer reviewers or associate editors
d. Collating peer reviews and distributing them to the authors
i. Performing the initial editing of every article
e. Having the final say on article acceptance
f. Creating the TOC and choosing cover art
g. Submitting edited, peer-reviewed copy to the graphic designer

4. Editorial Board
a. The Editorial Board will be appointed by the Editor in Chief in consultation with the Managing Editor and HAPS Board of Directors.
b. Members will be drawn primarily from the HAPS Educator reviewer panel, but can also be recruited from outside this group in order to provide particular expertise to the Editorial Board.
c. All board members have the responsibility of recruiting new authors, increasing the profile of the journal in their institutions and professional spheres, participating in online Editorial Board meetings, and providing feedback and advice as required.
d. Each board member will have a particular area of responsibility, such as overseeing the review process for Educational Research articles or optimizing the peer review process.
e. The HAPS Board of Directors will also have a representative on the Editorial Board.
1. ADInstruments Sam Drogo Technology in the Classroom Award
a. Applicants must:
i. Be a member in good standing of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS);
ii. Be actively engaged in teaching anatomy and physiology at the undergraduate level;
iii. Provide a short description of the experiment or activity that exemplifies innovative use of technology in anatomy and physiology education;
iv. Provide a brief explanation of how this experiment or activity can be integrated into the curriculum to best benefit students;
v. Provide a letter of recommendation from the applicant’s Department Chair or appropriate Administrator;
vi. Provide a copy of a current resume or curriculum vitae.
b. Award Criteria:
i. Demonstration of innovation in education featuring technology that the educator has previously implemented (80%). To satisfy this criterion, the applicant may provide information such as:
· How he/she has tried innovative technologies and evaluated their success;
· How he/she has shared or proposes to share successful techniques with colleagues via presentations, publications or other submissions;
· How he/she has used innovative technologies to create student-centered, inquiry-based approaches that incorporate assessment of learning;
· How he/she has used technology to effectively enhance learning.
ii. Support from home institution (20%): Does the applicant’s Department Chair or Equivalent Administrator support the educator’s innovation and pursuit of excellence in teaching, as indicated in a letter of support?
c. Award: $1500 to attend the Annual meeting of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. Three awards are available, all sponsored by ADInstruments.
2. Gail Jenkins Teaching and Mentoring Award
a. Applicants must:
i. Be a HAPS member in good standing at the time of application, with an expectation that he/she will continue as a HAPS member.
ii. Be teaching an A&P course (broadly defined) in the current academic year, with an expectation that he/she will continue as an A&P instructor going forward.
iii. Provide a brief explanation of how he/she incorporates engaging learning activities into their classes, especially those involving active student participation and innovative use of common props to help their students understand the topic.
iv. Provide an abstract for the workshop he/she would present at HAPS (if selected) in order to share some of these activity ideas.
v. Provide a letter of recommendation from a colleague, department chair or appropriate administrator with direct knowledge of the applicant's teaching methods and student interactions.
vi. If possible, preference will be given to those also clearly demonstrating the spirit of sharing and promoting their active learning approach with fellow instructors at their own school and/or mentoring new and part-time instructors.
b. Award: $1000 and payment of Annual Conference registration.
3. John Martin Second Timer Award
a. Award Criteria:
i. Applicants must be HAPS members in good standing at the time of application.
ii. Applicants must be teaching an Anatomy & Physiology course in the current academic year. Teaching may be either full-time or contingent college/university positions or a full-time high school position. At least part of the teaching load must be face-to-face, as opposed to totally online.
iii. Applicants must have attended only one HAPS Annual Conference prior to applying for this award, so as to be a Second Timer when attending the Annual Conference next May.
iv. Award winners must attend the HAPS Annual Conference to receive the award at the HAPS General Membership Meeting. Conference dates can be found on the HAPS website.
v. Award winners must present either a poster or workshop at the HAPS Annual Conference. The deadline for submitting a poster/workshop proposal can be found on the HAPS website.
vi. Applicants must submit an online application, using the link above. No late applications will be accepted.
vii. Applicants must submit a CV or resume as part of the application.
viii. Both the application responses and the letter of recommendation should document how attending a HAPS Annual Conference will benefit the applicant’s teaching and professional development.
ix. A letter of recommendation from an appropriate administrator, colleague, or mentor must also be submitted by the deadline.
b. Award: $500 to help fund attendance at HAPS Annual Conference. There is funding for two awards in 2020 and for three awards starting in 2021. The total number of years of funding was not established up front.

a. Purpose: to encourage full-time faculty during their first five years of teaching anatomy and physiology to network with seasoned professionals by attending and making a presentation at the HAPS Annual Conference in May
b. Criteria:
i. Applicants must be full-time faculty members who have taught anatomy and physiology for five or fewer years.
ii. Applicants must be HAPS members in good standing at the time of application.
iii. Award winners must attend the HAPS Annual Conference and participate in the entire conference.
iv. Award winners must present either a poster or a workshop at the HAPS Annual Conference.
v. Applicants must submit an online application. No late applications are accepted.
vi. A letter of recommendation from an appropriate administrator, colleague, or mentor must also be submitted by the deadline.
c. Award: Registration fee for HAPS Annual Conference is paid, plus $400 as partial reimbursement of travel costs to attend the conference.
2. HAPS Full-Time Faculty Travel Award
a. Purpose: to encourage full-time faculty who have taught anatomy and physiology for more than five years to network with other seasoned professionals by attending and making a presentation at the HAPS Annual Conference in May.
b. Criteria:
i. Applicants must be full-time faculty members who have taught anatomy and physiology for more than five years.
ii. Applicants must be HAPS members in good standing at the time of application.
iii. Award winners must attend the HAPS Annual Conference and participate in the entire conference.
iv. Award winners must present a workshop at the HAPS Annual Conference.
v. Applicants must submit an online application. No late applications are accepted.
vi. A letter of recommendation from an appropriate administrator, colleague, or mentor must also be submitted by the deadline.

ii. Applicants must be HAPS members in good standing at the time of application.
iii. Award winners must attend the HAPS Annual Conference and participate in the entire conference.

iii. Award winners must present either a poster or a workshop as a first author at the HAPS Annual Conference.

v. A letter of recommendation from an undergraduate or graduate advisor, faculty mentor, or employer must also be submitted by the deadline.
